Formal Fashion: Express Tuxedo Separates

Right in the heart of downtown Toronto is this six-storey high illuminated advertisement featuring a very smart looking tuxedo.  To me, it’s as much a promotion of the concept of classic black tie as of the featured suit.    Thank you Express!

On their Web site Express describe themselves as a “must-have sexy, sophisticated fashion brand . . . It’s what’s new and what’s now for young fashion-forward women and men.”  Their take on formal wear infuses some modern touches into traditional styling, with good and bad results.

“Navy Photographer Tuxedo Jacket”

The first of two jackets they offer is the navy Photographer tuxedo jacket, a sharp one-button shawl-lapel model.  Of course it’s a slim cut because that’s what the kids are wearing these days.  The retailer’s 20 to 30-year-old demographic is also looking for low prices so it’s understandable that Express takes some shortcuts to keep prices down:  The current sale price is $149 US but the trade-off is a poly/wool blend.

“Navy Tuxedo Blazer”

Their second jacket is a navy tuxedo blazer for $114.  This one-button peaked-lapel model has a more conventional cut and is made from cotton/polyester/spandex blend.

If you want to go full formal with either jacket then you are limited to trousers from their slim-fitting Photographer line (on sale for $74).  They are both thigh-hugging and hip-riding resulting in the classic douchebag tuxedo look that’s been so popular lately on runways and red carpets:

Personally, I would opt for the conventional fitting blazer and use it for non-formal occasions paired with dressy jeans, dress shoes and either a black bow tie, black long tie or no tie at all.
